Arms

Liposuction surgeons agree the arms are one of the body areas that consistently gives patients the highest level of satisfaction and happiness. Before liposuction the older method to reduce the size of arms was excising the excess fat. This surgery, called brachioplasty, always left unsightly scars that precluded women from wearing short sleeve blouses.

The cosmetic and aesthetic goals of Smartlipo™ on the arms is to produce a proportionate appearance of the arms, rather than removal of all fat from the arms. Liposuction typically requires removal of the fat from the posterior or back part of deep subcutaneous fat compartment of the triceps and biceps muscles. The volar or inner part of the arms is primary void of fat and it contains important neurovascular structures, thus we try and avoid doing surgery on this part of the arm.

Tumescent liposuction of the arms using microcannulas typically provides excellent cosmetic results. Excision of skin from the arm is now not necessary, because microcannular tumescent liposuction of female arms consistently yields well proportioned results without visible surgical scars.

As in every liposuction surgery, the surgeon must take great care to avoid excessive removal of fat. Arms that are disproportionately smaller than a patient’s body habitus will not be appealing. As with all liposuction cases using laser-assisted lipolysis with Smartlipo™, patients typically see results immediately after surgery. But we expect the final end result of skin tightening and laser lipolysis to occur at four (4) to six (6) months after the surgical procedure.

APPROPRIATE PATIENT

Not every person is a good candidate. Liposuction of the arms is almost exclusively a procedure for women. Exercising and weight lifting typically does not reduce the volume of fat located on the arms, and most women do not want arms that appear muscular or masculine. A heavy, bulky arm gives the appearance of obesity, whereas a thinner arm helps to give the appearance of a thinner body.

SIDE EFFECTS, COMPLICATIONS, AND ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES

As with any surgery, a surgeon or patient can’t predict what may happen during or after surgery. Rare problems that can occur are insertion site scarring, keloids, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation of insertion scars, nodularity, skin irregularities, waviness of skin, localized tenderness, hyperesthesia, poor skin retraction, hematomas, seromas, and localized and systemic infection.
