Ideal Liposuction Candidates

Ideal Liposuction Candidates

Almost anyone can be a good candidate for SmartLipo™. In general, the ideal candidate: (1) is in good health, exercises regularly, and is within 25 lbs. of their ideal weight; (2) has one or more areas of localized body fat deposits that have responded poorly to diet and exercise; and (3) is bothered by these fatty areas and motivated to get rid of them permanently. Your doctor will review the benefits and risks of SmartLipo™ with you during your consultation visit. He will assess whether you are a good candidate with respect to your medical health, and he will clarify what SmartLipo™ could do for you.

General Requirements for Liposuction Surgery

  • Patients should be at least 18 years old.
  • Pregnant or lactating women should not have liposuction.
  • Individuals with certain health problems may not be good candidates for liposuction.
  • Anyone who is taking blood-thinning medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory must discontinue use of the medication before and after surgery.
  • People with lidocaine allergies will not be unable to undergo the procedure because lidocaine is used in the local anesthesia

Realistic Expectations for Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction should not be expected to help you loose substantial amount of weight. Liposuction is to help people who are in a good state of physical and mental health. It is for people looking to fix a problem area that is resistant to traditional diet and exercise. If your expecting liposuction to dramatically change your appearance you will probably be disappointed. The “ideal” candidate has a normal BMI and is not over weight or obese. However, for patients who are above their ideal BMI liposuction can be satisfying to correct those body areas that most concern you. Our office does liposuction on patients who are fifty (50) to one-hundred (100) pounds over weight.

What Medical Problems or complications can occur?

Laser assisted liposuction using Smartlipo™ is an extremely safe procedure. It was approved by the FDA in November of 2006, and serious life-threatening complications have never been reported. Smartlipo™ when performed under awake local tumescence anesthesia is safe when compared with general anesthesia. Smartlipo™ has been performed worldwide thousands of times before being brought to North America. Since its introduction here in the United States it has shown itself to be one of the safest cosmetic surgeries available.

Laser assisted liposuction with Smartlipo™ is safer than traditional liposuction because there is minimal bleeding and it is minimally invasion. In addition, only local anesthetic drugs are used in the Smartlipo™ procedure. There are no stitches or large incisions, and no lengthy hospital stays are required. It is an outpatient procedure that is one of the safest and fastest-growing cosmetic surgery options available today.
